Causes of Dry Eye Disease
At all times, a tear layer is present on the surface of the eye. Dry eye occurs when there is a problem with the eye's ability to retain or create a consistent tear film. The tear film is comprised of oil and water. The oily layer helps prevent the tears from drying too quickly on the surface of the eye. The watery layer helps the tears spread evenly over the eyes. If either of these layers are deficient, symptoms of dry eye can develop. Possible causes of dry eye disease include the following:
- Seasonal or environmental allergies
- Increased screen time
- Medical conditions including diabetes, autoimmune disorders, pre/peri-menopause, older age
